Spiritual Bottle Deposit

Have you ever participated in a bottle drive?  Just collect a bunch of old containers, turn them in, and get cash for your favorite organization.

When I was a kid, I thought that this was a cash redemption, like California offers its residents.

But here in New York, we all pay an extra 5¢ for each and every drink container which qualifies for bottle redemption.

Paul writes, “You also became believers in Christ. That happened when you heard the message of truth. It was the good news about how you could be saved. When you believed, he marked you with a seal. The seal is the Holy Spirit that he promised.  The Spirit marks us as God’s own. We can now be sure that someday we will receive all that God has promised. That will happen after God sets all of his people completely free. All of those things will bring praise to his glory” Ephesians 1:13-14, NIrV).

In other words, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not simply a humanistic description of being nice to one another.

Rather, the Spirit gives Christians the assurance that we are already on deposit and prepared for redemption.
