“Word of God”

January 2, 2011 Leave a comment

The phrase “word of God” appears in the NIV 39 times.

These words are found most frequently in Acts, a total of 11 times.  The only time “Word of God” is capitalized and used as a proper noun is in Revelation 19:13.

However, I sense that the intent of the Navigators’ two-week study is based more upon John’s description of Jesus in John 1:1-18.

Understanding Prayer: Lord, Teach Us to Pray

January 2, 2011 Leave a comment

In Luke 11:1-12, Jesus answers a disciple’s request: “Teach us how to pray.”

Jesus starts with the Lord’s Prayer, and then expands upon this answer with the story of a bold neighbor who asked for help in the middle of the night.

It sounds like Jesus is encouraging his followers to make bold requests shamelessly.

This feels really selfish, but the story is about feeding an unexpected guest.

So it may be that bold requests are OK when the goal is serving someone else, not just for selfish gain.
