You are ‘gods’

January 7, 2011 Leave a comment

I find John 10:34 one of the most curious verses in the Bible: Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’?

In Psalm 82, Asaph calls sons of the Most High ‘gods.”

Jesus quotes this psalm when he is threatened with stoning after he calls himself the son of God.

Jesus explains that if the Old Testament uses the term ‘god’ to describe people “to whom the word of God came,” then there is no reason to stone him for blasphemy.

Jesus’ Prayer

January 7, 2011 Leave a comment

In John 17, Jesus prays for himself, his disciples, and “also for those who will believe in me through their message.”

The first two sections are beautiful and imspiring.

The last section is a prayer that hasn’t been answered.  Jesus prays that  his followers will “be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”

I can’t picture this actually happening, but I don’t think that Jesus would pray an impossible prayer.

As Jesus taught in the parable of the persistent widow, we should pray and never give up.  I commit to praying for this unity regularly.
