Don’t Judge

“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye” (vv. 1-5).

Jesus Raises the Bar

“You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny” (vv. 21-26).

Ecclesiastes 3:17

I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for he has appointed a time for every matter, and for every work (NRSV).

Judgment and Hell

Hmm, 9-Year Bible recommends a 2-week study on judgment and hell.

Think I’ll do a quick search and move on.

The word judgment appears in the NIV 158 times.

The word hell appears only 15 times, all in the New Testament.

I’m now 31 weeks into the 8th year of the 9-Year Bible sequence. After reading Philemon and Matthew, I’ll have studied the entire New Testament in detail. There are some Old Testament chapters, two character studies on Nehemiah and Peter, and three remaining topical studies.

How exciting that in 2015 or 2016, I’ll have finished this journey through the Navigator Bible Studies Handbook long-range Bible study program!

Misguided Condemnation

You have condemned and murdered the righteous man, and he did not defend himself.

For this reason, my brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the return of the Lord. Look! The farmer knows how to wait patiently for the land to produce vegetables and fruits. He cannot harvest a freshly planted seed. Instead, he waits for the early and the late showers to nourish the soil. You need this same kind of patience, so in the meantime, strengthen your resolve because the Lord will be coming soon.

Brothers and sisters, don’t waste your breath complaining about one another. If you judge others, you will be judged yourself. Be very careful! You will face the one true Judge who is right outside the door (vv. 6-9, The Voice).

Beware Judgment

Since the beginning, our loving Creator has been pursuing us, drawing us closer to Him. He invites us to move closer to Him so we can be fully His.

Now is the time to lament, to grieve, and to cry. Dissolve your laughter into sobbing, and exchange your joy for depression. Lay yourself bare, facedown to the ground, in humility before the Lord; and He will lift your head so you can stand tall. My brothers and sisters, do not assault each other with criticism. If you decide your job is to accuse and judge another believer, then you are a self-appointed critic and judge of the law; if so, then you are no longer a doer of the law and subject to its rule; you stand over it as a judge. Know this—there is One who stands supreme as Judge and Lawgiver. He alone is able to save and to destroy, so who are you to step in and try to judge another? (vv. 9-12, The Voice)

Judgment

Is it my business to judge those outside the church? Aren’t you supposed to judge those inside the church? God will judge those outside (1 Corinthians 5:12-13a).
