You are ‘gods’

January 7, 2011 Leave a comment

I find John 10:34 one of the most curious verses in the Bible: Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’?

In Psalm 82, Asaph calls sons of the Most High ‘gods.”

Jesus quotes this psalm when he is threatened with stoning after he calls himself the son of God.

Jesus explains that if the Old Testament uses the term ‘god’ to describe people “to whom the word of God came,” then there is no reason to stone him for blasphemy.

In Luke 5:1-3, we read that Jesus’ teaching is called the word of God.

This is another use of this phrase, and adds another layer of meaning.

Parable of the Crazy Farmer

In Luke 8:4-15, Jesus tells and interprets the parable of the sower.  Pastor David Votaw affectionately calls the sower the “Crazy Farmer” since it’s not normal to spread seed anywhere and everywhere.

According to Jesus, “The seed is the word of God.”

The “word of God” as the Law

Jesus uses the phrase “word of God” to refer to the Old Testament law in Matthew 15:6 and Mark 7:13.

He argues with the Pharisees and teachers of the law that it is hypocritical to allow adult children to devote property to God to avoid using the funds to care for ailing, elderly parents.

“Word of God” in the Old Testament

This phrase appears only three times, in 1 Kings, as a prescriptive prophecy to King Rehoboam; 1 Chronicles, as a prescriptive prophecy to King David; and Proverbs.

The idea is that if God says it, then we should do it.

The challenge is that people are the medium of the message, so we need to discern the difference between a genuine word of God and a fraud.

“Word of God”

The phrase “word of God” appears in the NIV 39 times.

These words are found most frequently in Acts, a total of 11 times.  The only time “Word of God” is capitalized and used as a proper noun is in Revelation 19:13.

However, I sense that the intent of the Navigators’ two-week study is based more upon John’s description of Jesus in John 1:1-18.
